Fresh off of scoring his 3,000th career win on Friday, Gilbert Ortiz rode fastest qualifier Heza Louisiana Dash to a three-quarter length victory in Saturday’s 400-yard, $267,171 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders’ Association Derby (R) at Evangeline Downs.

Heza Louisiana Dash stopped the timer in :19.893 while posting a 91 speed index against a 5-mph head wind. Kenneth Roberts Sr. prepped the Heza Fast Dash gelding for owner TM Ranch, which acquired Heza Louisiana Dash for $52,000 at the 2013 LQHBA Yearling Sale.

Heza Louisiana Dash was bred by Jumonville Farms and Burnett Ranch. The gelding was coming off of a 2 1/4-length victory in the second of three trials on November 11.

Raced exclusively in Louisiana, Heza Louisiana Dash has won six of 12 starts, and the $118,891 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes score increased his bankroll to $212,115, of which $165,044 has been pocketed this season.

Heza Louisiana Dash was coming off of a Fair Grounds summer campaign in which he ran second, a neck behind Jes A Fast Dasher, in the 350-yard, $50,000 Treme Derby (R) for state-bred 3-year-olds.

Louisiana Jambalaya, Icanonlyemagine, Dashacrossyourmind, Jes A Fast Dasher, Louisiana Sixshooter, Little Blue Dove, B And G Fast Dash, Game Hi, and Shes A Fast Dash completed the order of finish.
