S-Quarter K LLC’s Heza Dasha Fire, last year’s champion 2-year-old gelding, is the fastest qualifier to the November 1, $859,400 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1).

Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores in the last of three trials on Sunday, Heza Dasha Fire covered 400 yards in :19.488 while defeating fourth-fastest qualifier He Is The Risingstar by 1 3/4 lengths. The homebred Walk Thru Fire gelding’s victory was his ninth in 10 starts, and it pushed his earning’s to $1,045,240.

“Cruz said he was sitting there aboard Heza Dasha Fire,” said Don Meneely of S-Quarter K. “He was ready to run. They schooled in the paddock last week, and he got so mad when he saw the horses leaving to race and he wasn’t joining them.

“He wasn’t happy,” he added. “He wanted to run. All day today you could tell that he knew it was time to run. He’s a once-in-a-lifetime type of horse. We’ll never get another like him, and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone else.”

Second-fastest qualifier Tallulah Moon won the first heat by three-quarters of a length for her owner, Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP. Jose Alvarez rode the Corona Cartel filly for trainer Mike Robbins.

Tallulah Moon was making her first start since December 14, when the filly ran second in the Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational Stakes.

“She had ankle and knee surgery after she left here last year,” Robbins said. “She was off three to four months and was resting in Texas before we put her back in training this summer. She was a little sluggish in training at first, but she got going pretty quickly.

“She’s a hard trying filly,” added the trainer. “She gives you everything she’s got. If she hadn’t had surgery, we would’ve raced in some of the Ruidoso derbies and in some of the Bank of America Racing Challenge events.”

The winner of the Los Alamitos Super Derby will earn a berth in the 440-yard, $600,000 Champion of Champions (G1) in December. The complete list of qualifiers: Heza Dasha Fire, Tallulah Moon, Forget It, He Is The Risingstar, Run By You, Take A Look, Kickin Your Can, Sass Me Blue, Chicanery, and Bouncer.
