Bell Scores Ajax Hat Trick

Leading jockey Brian Bell wins three on Ajax holiday card.

Press Release

Brian Bell wins at Ajax.

Ajax Downs' leading jockey, Brian Bell, scored three wins on the 11-race Canadian Thanksgiving Holiday card on Monday, October 12.
Bell's first win came in the third race aboard First Lady Katy for trainer Stephanie Keeble and Full Circle Racing. The 3-year-old filly in her previous out won an allowance over recent Picov Derby-winner Embrace Extravagence. In this win, First Lady Katy broke outwards from the far outside post but made a big late rally and got up to win by a nose, covering the 330 yards in a time of :16.95.
Two races later, Bell piloted First Down The Track to victory in a 110-yard 'Gridiron Gallop.' Exiting a seventh place finish in the Alex Picov Memorial Championship, she broke like a rocket and held on the win by a neck despite lugging out in a time of :6.94. First Down The Track has now won 10 of her 32 career starts with earnings of $198,836. She is trained by Kim Ito and owned by Richard Wincikaby and DK Training Center.
In the day’s final race, after a lengthy delay caused by late scratches, Bell earned his hat-trick aboard Howard Walton's This Girl Is Wild. Despite taking a bump at the start and lugging out, the Les Baker trainee asserted an early lead and drew off in the late yards to win the 300 yard race in :15.86.
Bell has led the rider standings at Ajax for the majority of the season, and now has 37 wins at the meet. Cassandra Jeschke is second in the standings with 24 wins, and Tony Phillips and Helen Vanek are tied for third, both with 21 wins.
Live racing continues at Ajax Downs on Monday, October 19, with first post at 12:55 ET, and a Monday, October 26, card is currently unofficially scheduled.
