Major Moonflash Tops New Mexico Cup Derby Qualifiers

The multiple stakes placed son of First Moonflash won the third of three trials at Zia Park on Sunday.

Major Moonflash, a son of First Moonflash owned by Pierre and Leslie Amestoy of Albuquerque, is the fastest qualifier to the November 1, $140,000-added New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2).

Ridden by Adrian Ramos for trainer Wes Giles in the third of three trials on Sunday, Major Moonflash covered 440 yards in :21.912 while defeating third-fastest qualifier Dark Moonflash by three-quarters of a length. The sorrel gelding was coming off of a second-place finish to Astica in the 400-yard, $146,578 First Moonflash Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-olds at The Downs at Albuquerque on September 27.

Major Moonflash was bred by Mike Abraham. The gelding has earned $78,962 from nine outs this season.

Second-fastest qualifier Mr Mo Runaway won the second heat by three-quarters of a length in :21.912. The gray son of Sign To Be A Runaway was ridden by Jose Enriquez for owner Eusebio V. Sanchez and trainer Manuel Urioste.
