Regal Racing Stables' Eyema Blue Wagon made his career debut with a one-length victory in the third of eight 300-yard West Texas Futurity (G2) trials at Sunland Park on Friday.
Sent to post as the 2-1 favorite and aided by a 29-mph tail wind, Eyema Blue Wagon tripped the timer in :15.165 while earning an 88 speed index and the fastest qualifying time to the $217,850 final on April 30. Sergio Becerra Jr. rode the brown colt by PYC Paint Your Wagon for trainer Albert Franco.
Eyema Blue Wagon was bred in Oklahoma by Dee and Betty Raper. The colt sold for $29,000 at last year's Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. His dam, the Mr Eye Opener mare Eyema Blues Girl, is a half sister to world champion Blues Girl Too and Grade 1 winner Blues Man Too.
Gamey Tee Cos, the second-fastest qualifier, won heat 4 by 1 1/4 lengths for owner Jessica Meza. A $9,500 buy at last year's Louisiana QHBA Yearling Sale, the Tee Cos colt was ridden by Manuel Gutierrez for trainer Juventino Ruiz.
The winner of this year's West Texas Futurity will earn $102,389. Click here for a complete list of finalists.
