Rogelio Garza Guajardo's TLC Dale, a homebred colt by The Louisiana Cartel, pushed his win streak to three with a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday's $191,000 Sam Houston Derby (G3) at Sam Houston Race Park.
Ridden by Manuel Gutierrez for trainer Adrian Huitron, TLC Dale made his 350-yard trip in :17.405 and posted a 103 speed index while defeating Real Solid Oak by a neck. The colt has won all three of his outs this season after a 2-year-old campaign in which he failed to win a race but ran second in the October 10, 400-yard Dash For Cash Juvenile Invitational Stakes at Lone Star Park.
"He showed he was a runner in his first start," said Huitron, referring to TLC Dale's second-place finish in a Dash For Cash Futurity (G1) trial on September 26. "We were fortunate that he got into the Dash For Cash Juvenile.
"We shipped him to Evangeline after that, but we didn't have any luck, so we brought him back here to prepare for this race," added the trainer. "Hopefully, he can keep his momentum and keep on going."
Huitron said that TLC Dale might make his next start in the Firecracker Derby trials at Delta Downs in June.
TLC Dale has won three of his six starts and has banked $92,917, of which $81,500 has been earned this season.
GYR Jammer ran third, a half of a length behind TLC Dale. My Moment Of Fame, 8-5 favorite Ivan James, Jess Blue Intriguing, Telleritstime, Sissy Cartel, and Dash Dont Cheat completed the order of finish.
