Once Over Gets Up for West Texas Maturity Score

The 7-year-old Walk Thru Fire gelding wins the Grade 2, $99,704 stakes by a nose Sunday at Sunland Park.

Hector Aldrete rode Once Over, a 7-year-old son of Walk Thru Fire and the fastest qualifier, to the gelding's fourth career stakes victory in Sunday's Grade 2, $99,704 West Texas Maturity at Sunland Park.

Trained by Isidro Rodriguez for owner Jaime Busanda, Once Over defeated 2-1 favorite JM Miracle by a nose in :19.986 for 400 yards. Once Over was coming off of a 1 3/4-length win in the first of three trials on April 8.

Once Over was bred in California by Edward Allred. The gelding has won seven of 26 races and has banked $218,245, of which $125,936 was earned during a 5-year-old campaign in which he won three stakes, including the 400-yard, $100,000 Spencer L. Childers California Breeders' Championship (RG1) at Los Alamitos.

PYCs Little Lady finished third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Once Over. Testing The Ice, See Yacht Sea Jump, This Lady Is On Fire, Jess Featureme Quick, Aka Bugga, The Ocean King, and Kru 82 completed the order of finish.
