Regal Racing Stables LLC's Eyema Blue Wagon sprinted to a neck victory in Saturday's Grade 2, $217,904 West Texas Futurity at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. for trainer Albert Franco and sent to post as the 6-5 favorite, Eyema Blue Wagon went 300 yards in :15.180 and posted an 88 speed index. The colt's victory was his second in as many starts, and the $102,414 winner's share of the purse increased his earnings to $107,769.
Eyema Blue Wagon was bred in Oklahoma by Dee and Betty Raper of Norman. The colt's sire, PYC Paint Your Wagon, is a 13-year-old multiple Grade 1-winning son of Corona Cartel. The fastest qualifier from eight trials on April 15, Eyema Blue Wagon was acquired for $29,000 at last year's Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City.
"We really liked his sire and dam," said Roy Sanchez of Regal Racing Stables. "He has a really good body, and we had a good feeling about him early. He ran very well in the trials, so we were comfortable about how he developed as a 2-year-old.
"This is one of the best feelings in the world," he added. "He's headed to Ruidoso."
Jess Prize Me finished second and was followed by Groupie James, Valorus, Imperial Eagle, Gamey Tee Cos, Willie Be Fired, Lord Fa, Mojo Perry, and Stella Lou.
