Jess Ravin, a sorrel daughter of Corona Cartel racing for Enrique Gonzalez's EG High Desert Farms, is the fastest qualifier to the August 21, $203,200 Golden State Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Jesus Ayala for trainer Yanet Rodriguez, Jess Ravin won the first of two 400-yard trials on Sunday. The filly defeated Militarist by a neck in :19.663 while scoring her fifth win in five outs and pushing her earnings to $77,137, of which $73,507 has been banked this season.

Jess Ravin has won her last three starts, including two stakes, and she ran second in the 400-yard La Primera del Ano Derby (G3) on April 2. EG High Desert Farms acquired the filly for $68,000 at the 2014 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.

"Jess Ravin is at the top of her game," said Ayala after the race. "She's very strong right now and doing everything right."

EG High Desert Farms will also be represented in the Golden State Derby final by Walk Thru Crystal, last year's champion 2-year-old filly. The California-bred Walk Thru Fire filly ran second, a half of a length behind Rite Regal, in the second trial.

Rite Regal is a gelded son of Favorite Cartel trained by Jose Flores for owner Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC. Ridden by Cruz Mendez, Rite Regal covered his 400-yard trip in :19.833 for his seventh win in 11 races and fourth win in six outs this season.

"He did a great job and is becoming more professional with every race," said Flores of Rite Regal. "We're looking forward to the final against the likes of Jess Ravin. (Rite Regal) is maturing and becoming more of a racehorse. He's fast, and the talent is all there. He just has to put it together. If he does, he'll continue enjoying success."
