Alejandro Medina's Mavara Vegas, making her first start at Prairie Meadows in nearly two years, outran her 10-1 odds to win the $45,000 Keokuk Stakes (G3) at Prairie Meadows on Saturday.
Prepped by Sacramento Chavez, who gave a leg up to jockey Cody Smith, Mavara Vegas covered 400 yards in :19.503 and posted a 98 speed index. The 4-year-old mare returned a $22 win mutuel and teamed with odds-on favorite AJs High, who finished a head behind the winner, for a $2 exacta payoff of $86.80.
Mavara Vegas was bred in California by Dunn Ranch Ltd. The mare's sire, Fdd Dynasty, was the sport's champion 2-year-old colt in 2006 and champion sophomore colt the following season.
Mavara Vegas was coming off of a clear one-length victory in the 400-yard, $49,680 Indiana Grand Classic Stakes at Indiana Grand. She has won six of 17 races, including four stakes, and the $26,100 winner's share of the purse from her first graded stakes score pushed her bankroll to $191,073.
Sudden Separation, the 7-2 second choice in the field of seven, ran third to complete a $42.90 ($1) trifecta. Tempting Valor, A Will And Away, A Royal Country Man, and Elegant Okey completed the order of finish.
