Rite Regal extended his win streak to four in Sunday's 400-yard, $203,200 Golden State Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez, Rite Regal defeated Militarist by a head in :19.704. Jose Flores trained the gelded son of Favorite Cartel for owner Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC.
Rite Regal's streak includes a head victory in the April 3, $210,000 El Primero del Ano Derby (G3).
"It was a shame that this horse didn't get into the (Los Alamitos) Two-Million (Futurity) last year, but he's making up for it this year," said Flores. "I hope he continues on the right path. He's in the Super Derby, and we're looking at the Southern California Derby or Champion of Champions. We'll see if he gets it done.
"Cruz did an excellent job on him," he added. "He left better than he has in a long time. He looked like he did in the first race when I first ran him. He started drifting in, but I think Cruz has found the way to riding him. I know Cruz did a lot of studying, and he (watched video replays) of a lot of the races he'd been running.
"Cruz told me he was going to make some changes in the way he would ride him. I saw that Cruz got after him left-handed, and I think that made a lot of difference. He let him get into his stride, and before the horse even thought about drifting in, he used the whip one or two times on the horse."
Rite Regal was bred by Dr. Steve Burns of Menifee, California. A $10,700 buy at the 2014 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale, the gelding has won eight of his 12 outs, and the $85,344 winner's share of the purse from his second career stakes victory boosted his earnings to $215,275.
Jess Ravin, the 3-5 favorite, finished third, three-quarters of a length behind Rite Regal, and was followed by Go Black Benny, Sale Topper, Senor Gianni, Much Better Reason, Walk Thru Crystal, Free Swinger, and Peacefull Delight.
