Fastest qualifier Ivan James, a homebred colt by Ivory James campaigned by Jorge Meraz and the 3-2 favorite, led at every call en route to a half-length win in Saturday's $156,780 Evangeline Downs Derby.

Ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. for trainer Jose Sanchez, Ivan James went 400 yards in :19.825 and earned a 94 speed index. The colt was extending his win streak to three races, and the $78,390 winner's share of the purse from his second stakes win of the season pushed his bankroll to $477,207.

Ivan James is out of First Dashin Bye, a homebred multiple graded stakes winning 11-year-old daughter of the First Down Dash stallion Dashin Bye. His second dam, the Speedy Hemp mare Fast N Smooth 880, won the 1992 Austin Derby at Manor Downs.

Ivan James has raced in Texas and Louisiana, and he has won six of 10 starts, including last year's Grade 2, 330-yard Sam Houston Futurity at Sam Houston Race Park, and he was the 2015 horse of the meet at Sam Houston. The colt's current streak includes a neck victory at odds of 8-1 in the 400-yard, $194,810 Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs on July 1.

Jess Bein The Hero finished second and was followed by Bloomer Ride, Politically Corrupt, Dynamite 123, Octonaut, Dash Dont Cheat, Motorboatin, Zoominforgrady, and Tf Little Bit Rowdy.
