Sent to post as the 17-10 choice in a field of eight sophomores, Enrique Carrion's EC Jet One responded with a neck win in the $390,935 Hialeah Derby at Hialeah Park.

EC Jet One covered 400 yards in :19.320 under jockey Rodrigo Vallejo. Judd Kearl saddled the homebred bay son of The Louisiana Cartel, who was winning for the fourth time in six starts and earning his first lifetime stakes victory.

The third-fastest qualifier, EC Jet One was coming off of a wire-to-wire victory over Grade 2 winner Tee Chic in his Hialeah Derby trial on December 27. The colt was bred in Texas, and his dam, Pretty Girl Perry, is an unraced 14-year-old mare by champion Mr Jess Perry.

EC Jet One banked $179,831 to push his earnings to $299,007. The colt's resume includes a third-place finish, 1 3/4 lengths behind winner Ivan James, in last year's 330-yard, $621,100 Sam Houston Futurity (G2) in Texas.

EC Jet One also finished sixth as the fastest qualifier in the $1,151,777 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.

"It was quite emotional to watch a horse I bred win such a big race," said Carrion. "Judd has done a great job with him, and Rodrigo knows him well. We were disappointed with the outcome in the Texas Classic Futurity, and this win gives us confidence in him again."

Tee Chic finished second and was followed by I No Shes A Hot Mess, Prized Wagon, Timepaintyourwagondw, Pryme Time, Grey Eyed Hero, and Fire Em Up Jess. Fastest qualifier Shez A Hot Valentine and 10th-fastest qualifier Finnick were scratched.
