Carson City Girl, an 18-1 longshot and the fourth-fastest qualifier, scored her first stakes victory in the $190,119 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-olds at Sunland Park on Sunday.
Racing for David E. and Sandra Barrett, Carson City Girl defeated 20-1 longshot My Mojito by three-quarters of a length in :19.277 for 400 yards. Larry Gamez rode the sorrel daughter of Woodbridge for trainer Fred Danley.
Carson City Girl was bred by Mac and Janis Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico. The filly's dam, Racetrack Barbie (TB), is a 10-year-old daughter of Hidden City (TB) who won the 2009 Joanne Dye Stakes (R) for Arizona-breds at Turf Paradise.
Carson City Girl has raced exclusively in New Mexico and has won three of her six starts. The $89,356 winner's share of the Shue Fly purse pushed her bankroll to $135,877. The filly was coming off of a third-place finish in her Shue Fly trial on December 28.
Carson City Girl returned a $38.20 win mutuel and teamed with My Mojito for a $2 exacta payoff of $572. Sic Em Sixes, the fastest qualifier and 6-5 choice in the full field of 10, finished third, 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner, to complete a $958 ($1) trifecta.
Major Bites, Frank N Jesse, Flash Of Love, Flash Theory, To Fast To Furious, Rocky El Roble, and First Zoomflash completed the order of finish.
