Jorge Meraz's Ivan James, a homebred colt by Ivory James and the fourth-fastest qualifier, outran his 8-1 odds to win Friday's $194,810 Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs.

Ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. for trainer Elpidio Luna Jr., Ivan James covered 400 yards in :19.352, and his winning margin was a neck from fastest qualifier and 7-10 favorite TLC Dale. In addition to earning a 103 speed index, Ivan James scored his second stakes victory and banked the $97,405 winner's share of the purse.

Ivan James was bred in Texas. His dam, the homebred Dashin Bye mare First Dashin Bye, won four graded stakes in Louisiana from 2007-08, including the 2008 Delta Downs Louisiana-Bred Derby (RG3) in her final career start.

Raced in Texas and Louisiana, Ivan James has won four of eight starts, including last year's Grade 2 Sam Houston Futurity at Sam Houston Race Park.

Ivan James returned an $18 win mutuel and teamed with TLC Dale for a $2 exacta payoff of $49.80. Third-fastest qualifier Shez A Hot Valentine finished third, three-quarters of a length behind the winner, to complete a $69.30 ($1) trifecta.

First Fancy Prize, Brave Heart Won, Slick Melody, Not Perry Pretty, Kiing Brett, Ricky Rockstar, and Mr Joe Perry completed the order of finish.
