Octonaut Soars to Fastest Retama Park Derby Qualifying Time
The First Down Dash gelding tops qualifiers to the July 30, $175,000-est. final.

Making his first start in the state of Texas, Octonaut rolled to a half-length victory in the last of six Retama Park Derby (G3) trials on Saturday.
As a result, Octonaut posted the fastest qualifying time to the July 30, $175,000-est. Retama Park Derby final. Ridden by Esgar Ramirez for owner Julian Gamez and trainer Rolando Almanza, the gelded son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash covered his 400-yard trip in :19.958 against a reported 13-mph head wind.
Octonaut was bred in California by A Regal Choice Inc. He has won two of nine outs and has banked $19,836, of which $16,051 has been earned this season.
