Wyok Ranch LLC's Valiant Rogue, a gelded son of Valiant Hero and the fastest qualifier, sprinted to a 1 3/4-length win in Saturday's 440-yard, $1,224,488 Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.
Ridden by Tanner Thedford for trainer Judd Kearl and racing against an 8-mph head wind, Valiant Rogue covered his quarter-mile trip in :21.545. The $514,285 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes victory pushed his earnings to $597,807 from 11 outs.
Valiant Rogue was coming off of a half-length victory in the first of 14 Rainbow Derby trials on July 10. The gelding was bred in Oklahoma by Bollenbach Farms, and he sold for $20,000 at the 2014 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
Raced in four states, Valiant Rogue has won five races, including three of his four outs this season. His resume includes a fifth-place finiish, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Tres Friends, in last year's 400-yard, $1,151,777 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.
"Like I said after his trial win, I've always liked this colt," said Kearl. "In the past he would beat himself. He has always been a big colt, and now he is mentally mature.
"He loves 440 (yards), and if all is good he'll be back," added the trainer, referring to the 440-yard All American Derby (G1) trials on August 21.
Valiant Rogue was sent to post as the 7-2 favorite and returned a $9 win mutuel. Runner-up Boogies Special Dash, a 7-1 longshot, completed a $2 exacta dividend of $79.20.
Stevie B First Cash, 8-5 favorite First Valiant Sign, Miss Feet Down First, Boxwineizfine, Appolitical Streak, Tf Im That Guy, Significant Runner, and Big Lew completed the order of finish.
