Fantastic Six Pack, the third-fastest qualifier, parlayed a fast break from post 10 into his first stakes victory in Saturday's $114,600 Blue River Derby (R) for Indiana-bred sophomores at Indiana Grand.

Campaigned by Duke Racing LLC of Whiteland, Indiana, Fantastic Six Pack covered 400 yards in a stakes-record :19.796 while defeating fastest qualifier Beach Bum Eddie by a neck and recording a 96 speed index. Cristian Esqueda rode the homebred Fantastic Corona Jr gelding for trainer Matt Frazier.

"He is a nice horse and easy to ride," said Esqueda, who also rode Fantastic Six Pack in his July 9 trial. "You just have to be confident and let him do his thing. He got next to that other horse (Beach Bum Eddie) and really dug in. He did that in the trials too. He just had nowhere to go."

Fantastic Six Pack is out of Six Packin Robin, a winning daughter of the Packin Sixes stallion Packin Sixes Jr who ran second in the 2005 QHRA of Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park and was a finalist in the '04 Speedhorse Gold and Silver Cup Futurity (RG2) at Fair Meadows at Tulsa.

Raced exclusively in Indiana, Fantastic Six Pack has won four of eight starts and has banked $126,665, and resume includes a second-place finish in last year's Miss Roxie Little Futurity (R).

"He was really immature at first, but he is getting better with every start," said Frazier. "He's a complete professional, and he's all racehorse. He got pinballed in his trial and came running under a hand ride and had horse left, so we knew he'd be tough tonight.

"He's a monster of a closer, and we knew if he was within a half of a length at the 250, he was going to give them trouble," added the trainer.

My Louisiana Rod, Maranatha Is Coming, Megatron Harry, Coco Beach, Wh Kenny G, Wrs Kool Bob, Euro Blazin, and She Is Mighty Classy completed the order of finish.
