Politically Corrupt Rallies to Win $175,700 Retama Park Derby

Politically Corrupt won Saturday's Grade 3 Retama Park Derby at Retama Park.

Double H Racing Investment LLC's Politically Corrupt, the eighth-fastest qualifier and a 16-1 longshot, got up in the final strides to win the $175,700 Retama Park Derby (G3) on Saturday.

Ridden by Cipriano Vidana for trainer Jose Sanchez and racing against a reported 8-mph head wind, Politically Corrupt covered 400 yards in :19.874. The Apollitical Jess gelding's winning margin was a short nose from fastest qualifier and 2-1 second choice Octonaut.

Politically Corrupt was bred in Texas by Andrew M. Gardiner. A $27,000 purchase at the 2014 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, the sorrel gelding has won five of 12 starts, including four of his last five outs, and the $70,280 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes win bumped his bankroll to $95,218.

Politically Corrupt's season resume includes a third-place finish in the May 13 Old South Derby at Delta Downs.

Miss Aguilar ran third, 2 1/4 lengths behind Politically Corrupt, and was followed by Especial Cartel, The Ram Cartel, even-money favorite and Grade 2 winner Gyr Jammer, Apollitical Wave, Countryfied Man, and Tee Chic.
