Sergio Becerra Jr. rode Play Misty Foreme to the gelding's first stakes win in the $163,843 Zia Derby (RG2) for New Mexico-bred sophomores at Ruidoso Downs.

Prepped by Shae Cox for owner Robert D. Smith, Play Misty Foreme covered 400 yards in :19.857, and his margin of victory was a nose from 13-10 favorite Datona Doll. The gelding posted the third-fastest qualifying time when he won one of four Zia Derby trials on July 16.

Play Misty Foreme was bred by Mac and Janis Murray's MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexico. His sire, Jesse James Jr, is a 15-year-old stakes-winning son of 1994 champion 2-year-old Mr Jess Perry.

Play Misty Foreme's dam, Arbor Mist, is a 15-year-old mare by Blushing Bug who won the '04 New Mexico State Fair Breeders' Derby (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs. A $22,000 purchase at the 2014 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, the gelding has three of nine starts and has banked $116,273.

Mahallo Moonflash, Blazin Moon Force, Jess Beer Money, and Hard Streaker completed the order of finish. There were four stewards' scratches from the final: fastest qualifier Jess Cruzin On By, A Blazin Flash, Sic Em Sixes, and Super Star Smith.
