Berkley Packer rode DNA Dales Prospect to a neck victory in Saturday's $130,600 Jaguar Rocket Futurity (R)) for Indiana-bred 2-year-olds at Indiana Grand.
Trained by Randy Smith for Donna and Noel Alexander's DNA Quarter Horses LLC, DNA Dales Prospect covered 300 yards in :15.681. The $71,830 winner's share of the purse from the bay gelding's first stakes win bumped his earnings to $74,580 from two outs.
"He got the lead about 100 yards in," said Packer, who was riding DNA Dales Prospect for the first time in a race. "He ran a big race tonight."
A homebred son of Coronas Prospect, DNA Dales Prospect made his debut with a win in his Jaguar Rocket Futurity trial on June 4.
"We've had horses for the Alexanders for three years now," said Debbie Smith, Randy's wife. "We had this horse at the training center in Florida, and we've liked him from the start. He's just an awesome horse and so smart. We have nothing but good things to say about him."
Sent to post as the 2-1 favorite in the field of nine, DNA Dales Prospect returned a $6 win mutuel and teamed with runner-up and second choice CB Come Fly With Me for a $17.20 ($2) exacta.
Chics Dirty Secret finished third, three-quarters of a length behind DNA Dales Prospect, and was followed by American Purr, Jes A Spitfire, Dashin To Fame, Run Run Corona, Flyhichicky, and WH Secretive. Fly N Sixes was scratched.
