Klassic Strawfly Upsets Jimmy Drake Stakes

The 10-year-old gelding earns his first stakes win in nearly four years Friday at SunRay Park.

Klassic Strawfly outran his 21-1 odds to win Friday's Jimmy Drake Stakes for New Mexico-breds at SunRay Park.

Klassic Strawfly scored one for the senior set on Friday, as the 10-year-old gelding pulled off an upset victory in the 400-yard, $33,800 Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-breds at SunRay Park.

Racing for Yaneth Cabrera and aided by an 18-mph tail wind, Klassic Strawfly defeated JJs Fast Cash RF by a clear 1 1/4 lengths in :19.180 and earned a 105 speed index. Alejandro Medellin rode the sorrel son of Genuine Strawfly for trainer Ron Stephens.

Klassic Strawfly was bred by his trainer. Sent to post at odds of 21-1, he returned a $45.80 win mutuel and paired with JJs Fast Cash RF for a $2 exacta payoff of $200.40.

Klassic Strawfly has won 12 of his 89 starts, including three of his last four, and the $20,280 winner's share of the purse from his second lifetime stakes victory increased his bankroll to $398,728. The gelding's win marked his first in a stakes in nearly four years, when he won the 2012 edition of the Jimmy Drake.

Downwiththequickness ran third, 2 1/4 lengths behind Klassic Strawfly, and was followed by Justified By Chicks, 9-10 favorite Major Moonflash, and A Blazin Flash.
