James Marquez's Roman Soldier Cd scored an upset half-length win in Saturday's Lovington Stakes at Zia Park.

Sent to post at odds of 17-1 in a full field of 10, Roman Soldier Cd responded with a half-length victory in Saturday's 400-yard, $50,000 Lovington Stakes (G2) at Zia Park.

Roman Soldier Cd earned an 89 speed index as he stopped the timer in :19.724. Sergio Becerra Jr. rode the Apollitical Jess colt for owner James Marquez and trainer Antoinette Gonzales.

Roman Soldier Cd was making his first start since August 21, when the colt ran fifth in a 440-yard All American Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs. He was bred in New Mexico by Cynthia H. Dick and he was acquired by Marquez for $17,000 at the 2014 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.

Roman Soldier Cd's dam, Famous Phoebe, is a 14-year-old daugther of Dash Ta Fame who won the '04 New Mexican Spring Futurity (G1) at Sunland Park. All told, the colt has won four of nine starts, and the $30,000 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes score pushed his bankroll to $123,160. Roman Soldier Cd's resume includes a fourth-place finish in last year's Grade 1, 400-yard Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso.

Alis Jumpn ran second and was followed by 8-5 favorite Tf Cajun Cartel, Memphis D Nasty, Bp Hit The Bigtime, Significant Runner, Six Episodes, Fine Oak Corona, Sprinster, and Carters Last Straw.
