Jessies First Down Wins Zia Park Championship

The homebred 5-year-old gelding gets his second Grade 1 win of the season.

Jessies First Down won Wednesday's Grade 1, 440-yard Zia Park Championship.

Making his first-ever start over the track, Jessies First Down sprinted to a head victory in the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Championship (G1) on Wednesday.

Jessies First Down made his quarter-mile trip in :21.722 and earned a 93 speed index under jockey Rodrigo Vallejo. Judd Kearl trained the homebred 5-year-old son of champion Fdd Dynasty for owner Ted G. Abrams of Houston, Texas.

Jessies First Down was coming off of a clear 1 1/2-length win in the October 1, 440-yard Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star Park. The gelding has won nine of 26 starts and has banked $421,907, of which $269,842 has been earned from seven wins in 10 races this season.

Jessies First Down was sent to post as the 3-1 second choice and teamed with runner-up Zoomin Effortlessly, the 3-10 favorite in the field of seven, for a $15.60 ($2) exacta. Alis Jumpn ran third and was followed by Fly Thru The Fire, Apollitical Ok, Tf Im That Guy, and Memphis D Nasty.
