Maxx Tops Evangeline Downs Futurity Qualifiers

Irma Z. Vargas' Maxx is the fastest qualifier to the December 17, $317,500 Evangeline Downs Futurity.

Prepped by Rolando Almanza, Maxx won the sixth of 12 400-yard trials on Friday, covering the distance in :19.551 while defeating fourth-fastest qualifier Platinum Fdd by 1 1/4 lengths for his third victory in six starts. Manuel Gutierrez, who rode six winners on the program, rode the gelded son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon.

Maxx was bred in Oklahoma by Jim Gubas. He has earned $78,299, and his resume includes a victory in the May 16, 350-yard John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge Stakes (G3) in Texas.

Second-fastest qualifier Eye N Capo, the winner of the Grade 2, 400-yard Dash For Cash Futurity at Lone Star Park, won the first heat for owner Ruben Garcia Montemayor. Ridden by Damian Martinez for trainer Adrian Huitron, the sorrel son of the Corona Cartel stallion Capo de Capi defeated eighth-fastest quaifier by Gronkowski in :19.679 for his third win in as many outs.
