Minding her manners in the gate, Dr. Steve Burns' Little Talks parlayed a sharp break from post 3 into a wire-to-wire victory in Friday's $167,000 PCQHRA Breeders' Derby (G3) at Los Alamitos.
Little Talks covered 400 yards in :19.672, and her winning margin was a half of a length from My Favorite Check. Cesar DeAlba rode the homebred daughter of Favorite Cartel for trainer Mike Casselman.
"When she broke good, I thought that we'd be OK," Casselman said after the race. "That's the key with her. She can get a little nervous in the gate, and if you handle her too much she can get more nervous.
"The gate crew here has done a good job with her," he added. "They know her as well as I do, and they've done a really good job working with her and getting her settled down. If she breaks, she's usually tough on everybody because she always finishes well. She always tries hard."
The fastest qualifier, Little Talks was coming off of a half-length victory in the last of four trials on September 10. The filly broke sharply in that race, and that was the key, according to her trainer.
"She kind of goofed up in the gate in the (Adequan California Derby Challenge) and got herself left," Casselman said. "She left tenth out of 10 and it was too much for her to make up. It was really important for her to stand good and break. We're learning a little more about her as we go."
Little Talks isn't eligible for the Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1), but the Southern California Derby (G1) trials in November are a possibility for her next start. Dr. Burns said that, earlier this year, the filly was bred to Separate Interest and Foose, and she had surgery to have chips removed.
Little Talks has won seven of 12 races, including last year's Golden State Million Futurity (G1), and the $70,140 winner's share of the purse from her second graded stakes victory pushed her earnings to $541,772.
Docs Best Card, Thermonuclear Energy, You Can Fly, Royaltys Authority, Uno Corona Mas, Stel Easy, Ima Fearless Hero, and Unclaimed Dividend completed the official order of finish.
