Bobby Simmons’ Mitey Man, a gelded son of champion First Moonflash trained by Trey Wood, is the fastest qualifier to the September 24, $250,000-estimated New Mexico State Fair Quarter Horse Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.
Ridden by Edwuin Lujan in the second of five trials on Friday, Mitey Man covered 400 yards in :19.779 while scoring a wire-to-wire 2 1/4-length victory over non-qualifier Sticky Red Cebolla. The gelding was winning for the second time in four races while making his first career start at Albuquerque.
Mitey Man was bred by Debra Laney of Las Cruces, New Mexico. The gelding won one of his three outs during the recently concluded Ruidoso Downs summer meet, and he has earned $7,880.
Six of the 10 finalists came out of the fourth trial, led by second-fastest qualifier Scooters Debutant. A homebred Heza Motor Scooter filly trained by Donna McArthur for owner Joyce D. Erickson of Albuquerque, Scooters Debutant defeated third-fastest qualifier A Sure First by a half of a length in :19.797.
