Q-Racing Journal

Toshi Yoshi, a Colorado-bred 4-year-old gelding, won Sunday's Grade 2, 350-yard James Isaac Hobbs Stakes at Zia Park.

Making his first start outside Colorado, Dana Yoshida-Orozco's Toshi Yoshi scored a neck victory in Sunday's 350-yard, $50,000 James Isaac Hobbs Stakes (G2) at Zia Park.

Toshi Yoshi stopped the timer in :17.632 and earned a 90 speed index while racing against a reported 4-mph head wind. Raul Herrera rode the homebred 4-year-old gelding by the Shazoom stallion Pool for trainer Manuel Orozco.

Toshi Yoshi was bred in Colorado, and prior to Sunday the gelding had made all of his starts at Arapahoe Park near Denver. Toshi Yoshi has won seven of 12 outs, including two official black-type stakes at Arapahoe, and the $30,000 winner's share of the purse from his first graded stakes score pushed his bankroll to $168,579.

Toshi Yoshi was sent to post as the 3-1 favorite in the field of 10 and returned an $8.40 win mutuel. Rattle N Battle, the 4-1 third choice, ran second to complete a $44.40 ($2) exacta.

Bp Hit The Bigtime finished third, a half of a length behind Toshi Yoshi, and was followed by Apollitical Sign, Streakin Regard, Lethal Volcom, Eyeza Secret, Game Changes, Sweet Solid Rock, and Quemados Version.
