Running Dragon is Prompt Favorite in Sunburst Stakes

The Zulu Dragon filly extended her win streak to four at Sunland Park.

Sent to post as the 1-5 favorite in a full field of 10 New Mexico-bred sophomore fillies, Running Dragon extended her winning streak to four with a half-length victory in Saturday's $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (RG3) at Sunland Park.

Running Dragon covered 350 yards in :17.383 and posted a 93 speed index under jockey Adrian Ramos. Juan M. Gonzalez saddled the homebred daughter of the First Down Dash stallion Zulu Dragon for owner By By JJ LLC of El Paso, Texas.

Running Dragon was coming off of a clear 1 1/2-length win as the 3-10 choice in the 400-yard, $85,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association Stakes (RG2) on February 19. All told, the filly has won 10 of 12 outs, including six of six at Sunland, and the $51,000 winner's share of the purse from her fifth stakes victory pushed her bankroll to $572,641, of which $198,808 has been pocketed from three races this year.

Running Dragon is out of Banking Lane, a homebred 11-year-old daughter of the Storm Cat (TB) stallion Devon Lane (TB). Her third dam, the Disco Jerry mare Quick Step Disco, won the 1994 Ruidoso Horse Sale Futurity (RG3) at Sunland Park.

Princess Jessie Jane, the 7-2 second choice, finished second to complete a $1 exacta payoff of $3. Frost Dalena, Eyes Gona Flash You, First Vegas Moon, First Lluvia Runaway, La Montesa, La Riena Del Sur, Miss Call Me First, and Jess A Glance completed the order of finish.
