Mason A. King’s Regard The Rose is the fastest qualifier to the January 14, $206,816 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park.
Racing in the third of four 400-yard trials on Friday, Regard The Rose defeated eighth-fastest qualifier Jesse Klee by a clear 2 3/4 lengths in :19.148. Manuel Gutierrez rode the daughter of the Chicks Beduino stallion Chicks Regard for trainer Juan Chavez Ortega.
King acquired Regard The Rose for $6,000 at last year’s Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. The filly, who was bred by the Deming, New Mexico-based Coronas Black Diamond Partnership, is out of Not Sable Shes Rose, an unraced homebred 7-year-old daughter of the Count Corona stallion Coronas Blackdiamond.
Regard The Rose has won five of six races, including the August 13, 400-yard Arapahoe Park Futurity, and she has banked $61,130.
Second-fastest qualifier Frangellica won the fourth heat by a neck from third-fastest qualifier Everybuddys Talkin. Ridden by Martin Felix, the gray daughter of Big Daddy Cartel stopped the timer in :19.269 for her third win in eight outs. Jose DeHerrera prepped the filly for owners Paul Blanchard and Javier M. Chavez, who acquired Frangellica from breeder MJ Farms for $24,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs.
Frangellica is out of Tangled Vines, a winning homebred daughter of Dash Ta Fame. The filly is a half brother to graded stakes winner Rex Hill, and she has earned $49,495.
Other noteworthy Shue Fly finalists include Daddys Blushing, a multiple stakes winning son of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Jackie Riddle for owner Gary W. Hartstack of Houston, Texas. The winner of the first trial, the gelding posted the fourth-fastest qualifying time.
Flashy Tres and Flashin Cartel finished in a dead heat for third in the third trial. A shake will determine the 10th-fastest qualifier.
