Making his first start in more than two months, Despain GL sprinted to a neck victory in the $200,000 Sunland Park Juvenile Championship for 2-year-olds on Sunday.
Despain GL covered 400 yards in :19.676 under jockey Edwuin Lujan. R.L. "Rick" Robinson prepped the sorrel son of Desirio for the Garza Laurel Partnership LLC.
Despain GL was coming off of a third-place finish in a 400-yard Texas Classic Futurity (G1) trial at Lone Star Park on October 21. The gelding was bred in Texas by Somos Diez, and he is out of Pain And Pleasure, a winning 6-year-old daughter of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Mighty Invictus.
Raced in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, Despain GL has won three of six races, and the $80,000 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes victory pushed his earnings to $157,875.
Despain GL began his career at Remington Park, where the gelding won two of his four outs and was a finalist in the June 3, $1.155-million Heritage Place Futurity (G1), Oklahoma's richest horse race.
Believe Me Irene finished second and was followed by Suenos Dineros, 3-1 favorite A Passion For Flashn, Carris Cartel, Apollitical Brooke, Estrella Damm, Phantom Fury, Jessica Alexandra, Desire Astoli, and Pops.
