Klassic Strawfly is Fastest West Texas Maturity Qualifier

The 11-year-old gelding wins the second of three trials on Friday.

Klassic Strawfly, an 11-year-old son of Genuine Strawfly campaigned by Yaneth Cabrera of Peralta, New Mexico, is the fastest qualifier to the March 10, $115,100 West Texas Maturity (G2) at Sunland Park.

Racing in the second of three 400-yard trials and aided by a reported 13-mph tail wind on Friday, Klassic Strawfly defeated third-fastest qualifier Once Over by three-quarters of a length in :19.119. Alejandro Medellin rode the gelding for trainer Alfredo Gomez.

Klassic Strawfly was bred in New Mexico by Ron Stephens. Raced exclusively in his home state, the gelding has won 17 of 96 starts and has earned $574,821 since he began his career in 2008. He is coming off of his best season ever, as he won six of eight outs and banked $208,290 in 2016.
