Running Dragon Wins Shue Fly

The Zulu Dragon filly scores her third stakes win Sunday at Sunland Park.

Running Dragon scored her third career stakes victory in Sunday's 400-yard, $205,974 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) for New Mexico-bred sophomores at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Adrian Ramos and sent to post as the 2-1 second choice in the field of nine, Running Dragon defeated fastest qualifier and 7-10 favorite Magnifico Dragon by a half of a length in :19.416. Juan M. Gonzalez saddled the homebred daughter of Zulu Dragon for owner By By JJ LLC.

Running Dragon set the second-fastest qualifying time with her 1 1/4-length win in the last of five Shue Fly trials on December 23. The filly is out of Banking Lane, a homebred 11-year-old daughter of the Storm Cat (TB) stallion Devon Lane (TB) who earned $1,330 from five outs in New Mexico in '08. Her second dam, the winning homebred Strait To The Bank mare Banking Disco, ran fourth in the 2001 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland.

All told, Running Dragon has won eight of 10 races and has earned $470,641. She began her career with a five-race win streak that included victories in the 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland and 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs.

Running Dragon returned a $6.80 win mutuel and teamed with Magnifico Dragon for an $11 ($2) exacta payoff. First Kool Moon, the 6-1 third choice, ran third, 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner, to complete a $15.20 ($1) trifecta.

Mighty B Dragon, Altitude Project, Moon River, Rockin N Scootin, A Sure First and Higher Noon completed the order of finish. Third-fastest qualifier Flash Em The Jewels was scratched.
