Jrs Coronas Shadow Upsets Delta Downs Derby
The bay gelding outruns his 12-1 odds to score his first stakes win.
July 8, 2017
Jrs Coronas Shadow, a gelded son of Coronas Leaving You owned by Gary W. Hartstack of Houston, Texas, scored a wire-to-wire, half-length victory in the $257,160 Delta Downs Derby (RG2) for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds at Delta Downs.
Prepped by Kenneth Roberts Sr., Jrs Coronas Shadow covered 400 yards in :19.330 while aided by a reported 8-mph tail wind. David Alvarez rode the bay gelding, who was earning $128,580 and his first stakes win.
Jrs Coronas Shadow was bred by Julien R. Stevens III and was acquired by Hartstack for $15,500 at the 2015 LQHBA Yearling Sale. The sixth-fastest qualifier, he was coming off of a second-place finish, a nose behind fifth-fastest qualifier San Lorenzo Corona, in his Delta Downs Derby trial on June 16.
"We were looking for this horse to run a big race," said Roberts. "Last year as a 2-year-old, he won four races but never qualified for a futurity. He just needed to mature."
Jrs Coronas Shadow has won five of 11 starts and has banked $194,943, and his season resume includes second-place finishes in the 400-yard, $94,000 Mardi Gras Derby (R) at Louisiana Downs in March, and the 400-yard, $50,000 Vinton Stakes (R) at Delta Downs on May 20. The gelding was sent to post at odds of 12-1 and returned a $26.40 win mutuel.
Roberts said that Jrs Coronas Shadow might be pointed to a 3-year-old stakes during the summer meet at Fair Grounds Racecourse in New Orleans.
First Prize Bourban ran second and was followed by fastest qualifier and 2-1 favorite No Politics Here, One Hot Flame, Shez The Bomb, Zooboo, Tf Racee Runaway, Lightemupwithcharm, Shatto Stoli and San Lorenzo Corona.
