Apollitical Wave Surprises in TQHA Classic Stakes

The 4-year-old stallion outruns his 21-1 odds to win at Retama Park on Friday.

Javier Garza's Apollitical Wave earned his first stakes victory in Friday's $35,000 TQHA Classic Stakes at Retama Park.

Javier Garza's Apollitical Wave, a 21-1 longshot, rallied to win Friday's 400-yard, $35,000 TQHA Classic Stakes (RG3) for Texas-breds at Retama Park.

Ridden by Francisco Mendez for trainer Frank Mendez and racing against a reported 16-mph head wind, Apollitical Wave defeated Red Corona Warrior by a half of a length in :19.851. The 4-year-old Apollitical Jess stallion was making his first official start since March 18, when he ran third, 4 3/4 lengths behind winner Jess Bein The Hero, in the 400-yard, $15,000 Streakin La Jolla Stakes at Louisiana Downs.

Apollitical Wave returned a $44.80 win mutuel and teamed with Red Corona Warrior, who was sent to post at 5-1, for a $2 exacta payoff of $49.20. The stallion was bred by Francisco Javier Garza, and he has won two of 11 races. The $21,000 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes score pushed his earnings to $38,481.

Kraken Black ran third, three-quarters of a length behind Apollitical Wave. Rc Me Leaving You, the 2-1 choice in the full field of 10, finished fourth and was followed by Charm The Chief, Gianni Que, Sr Esmeralda, Kid Can Dash, Kw Cowboy, and Lee Brooks.
