A quick break from his rail post helped Pete Scarmardo's Dash Quick Perry score a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday's 400-yard, $156,600 Retama Park Derby at Retama Park.
Ridden by Francisco Calderon for trainer Leon Bard and sent to post as the 3-5 favorite, Dash Quick Perry defeated As And Js by a clear 1 1/2 lengths in :19.698. The sorrel son of Down N Dash recorded a 104 speed index while sprinting against a reported 12-mph head wind, and he banked the $62,640 winner's share of the purse.
Dash Quick Perry was bred by Scarmardo, a resident of Caldwell, Texas. The fastest qualifier, the gelding has won his last three starts, including the second of five trials on July 15.

Dm La Jolla finished third, two lengths behind Dash Quick Perry. Fdp Rock Solid, Vigilante, Good Captain Pepper, Jmf Dashing, and Big Tex completed the order of finish. Second-fastest qualifier Tac My Time and third-fastest qualifier Feature Moonflash were both listed as trainer scratches.
