Ageless Klassic Strawfly Adds Another Stakes Win to Resume

The 11-year-old gelding scores his fifth stakes victory in Friday's West Texas Maturity.

Klassic Strawfly, an 11-year-old son of Genuine Strawfly racing for Yaneth Cabrera of Peralta, New Mexico, is still on a roll, as the gelding was a prompt 17-10 favorite in Friday's West Texas Maturity (G2) at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Alejandro Medellin for trainer Alfredo Gomez, Klassic Strawfly defeated Jm Apollo by a head in :19.565 for 400 yards. The $54,103 winner's share of the $115,113 purse bumped he ageless gelding's earnings to $628,924, of which $269,433 has been banked since the beginning of 2016.

Klassic Strawfly was bred in New Mexico by Ron Stephens. The gelding, who began his career by winning a $15,000 maiden claiming race at Zia Park on November 15, 2008, has won 18 of 97 starts. Four of his five stakes victories have come since the beginning of last year and include last season's 440-yard, $170,000 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia.

Klassic Strawfly returned a $5.40 win mutuel and teamed with Jm Apollo, a 9-1 longshot, for a $43.60 ($2) exacta. May Be Fantastic SA, the 4-1 third choice in the field of nine, ran third, a neck behind the winner, to complete a $1 trifecta dividend of $88.50.

Walken To The Moon, Rattle N Battle, Flare For Ivory, Sf Hot Pass, Fine Oak Corona, and Once Over completed the order of finish. Gbh Gunsmoke was scratched.
