Vf Red Surprise outran her 21-1 to win Saturday's $100,000 Sooner State Stakes (RG1) for Oklahoma-breds at Remington Park.

Ridden by James Flores, Vf Red Surprise covered 400 yards in :19.776 while defeating 3-2 favorite Sam Crow by a head. Stuart Steele prepped the 4-year-old daughter of the Mr Jess Perry stallion First Prize Stanley for owner Cuadra Ladrilleros Ltd. Co. of Yukon, Oklahoma.

"We had a great start, and I just stayed out of her way the whole trip," said Flores, who has ridden Vf Red Surprise in three of her four outs during the current Remington meet. "She was running great, and I didn’t see a reason to get after her.

"I could see the horses on the inside coming to me at the end of the racetrack," he added. "I rolled my stick over and asked her for a little more, and we held on for the win.”

Vf Red Surprise was bred by Safari Racing. A $10,000 claimer during the 2015 Remington meet, the mare has won four of 14 starts, and the $59,400 winner's share of the Sooner State purse increased her earnings to $120,964, of which $73,642 has been banked from four races this season.

Vf Red Surprise returned a $44.40 win mutuel as the longest shot in the field of six. Sam Crow completed a $2 exacta payoff of $177.80.

AJs High ran third and was followed by Valiant Rogue, Ferrari James, and Regard With Respect.
