Rogelio Marquez Jr.'s Wild Tycoon kept his perfect season record intact with a convincing victory in Saturday's Develop A Plan Stakes (G3) at Delta Downs.
Prepped by Carlos Saldivar, who gave a leg up to jockey Everardo Rodriguez, and sent to post at odds of 19-1, Wild Tycoon defeated 15-1 longshot Cobalt Creek by a clear 1 1/4 lengths while covering 350 yards in :17.365. The 5-year-old gelding by champion Tempting Dash was stretching out in distance off of his half-length win at odds of 10-1 in the 110-yard, $15,000 Texas Twister Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on May 6.
Wild Tycoon was bred in Louisiana by Richard and Janelle Simon. The gelding has won eight of 19 outs, and the $15,000 winner's share of the $25,000 Develop A Plan purse increased his earnings to $66,511, of which $24,000 has been banked this year.
Wild Tycoon's resume includes a second-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Tm Dees Prize, in the 2015 Old South Derby at Delta.
Wild Tycoon paid $41.60 to win and teamed with Cobalt Creek for a $2 exacta return of $440.80. Senator Tamale ran third at odds off 7-1 to complete a $1,408.70 ($1) trifecta.
Brave Heart Won, the 6-5 favorite, finished fourth and was followed by One Dimple, Johnsonengine, Jess Bein The Hero, and Kraken Black.
The Develop A Plan Stakes honors Develop A Plan, a gelding by Coup de Kas (TB) and a three-time graded stakes winner at Delta Downs in the '90s. Develop A Plan was the sport's champion 3-year-old gelding in 1994.
