Making just his second career start at Lone Star Park, Nueve Racing's Apolltical Chad scored a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday's $384,355 Texas Classic Derby (G1).

Apolltical Chad covered his 440-yard trip in :21.525, and his margin of victory was a neck from Graceful Eagle. G.R. Carter rode the sorrel Apollitical Jess gelding for trainer Wes Giles.

"I'm glad I came out of retirement because I won this race two years in a row now," Carter said. "The horse looked phenomenal. Wes left him here between the trials and the finals, and he put on a little weight. He really blossomed.

"He left the gate really well," the rider added. "High Plains Perry was right there with me, but we made a nice little run to get away from him. He made the jockey look real good."

Apollitical Chad was bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith. The fourth-fastest qualifier, he was coming off of a one-length win in his Texas Classic Derby trial on October 20. The gelding has won six of 12 starts, including last year's Ruidoso Futurity (G1) in New Mexico, and the $171,039 winner's share of the Texas Classic Derby purse increased his earnings to $874,655.

"We'll take about five months off, and they maybe head to Oklahoma with him next spring if everything looks good," Giles said.

Percyjones, Political Mess, Tac My Time, fastest qualifier Duponte, Corona Carmelita, Dash Quick Perry, and High Plains Perrry completed the order of finish. Seventh-fastest qualifier Paint My Pilot was scratched.
