Papaws Paint Wins Hobbs America Futurity

The 10th-fastest qualifier gets it done in Sunday's Grade 2, $214,966 final.

Papaws Paint won Sunday's Hobbs America Futurity at Zia Park.

Tenth-fastest qualifier and 9-1 longshot Papaws Paint scored an upset three-quarter length win in Sunday's $214,966 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) at Zia Park.

Trained by Todd Fincher for owner R H Resources, Papaws Paint covered 400 yards in :19.888. Bonifacio Perez rode the Pyc Paint Your Wagon gelding.

Papaws Paint was bred in Oklahoma by Ray Herring. The gelding is out of Heavenly Trip, a homebred 13-year-old Splash Bac mare who won two graded stakes from 2006-09 and ran seventh in the '06 Hobbs America Futurity.

Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Papaws Paint has won five of six starts, including a 440-yard All American Futurity (G1) trial at Ruidoso Downs in August. The $103,184 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes score pushed his bankroll to $123,544.

Jessica Alexander, an 18-1 longshot, ran second to complete a $2 exacta payoff of $276.40.

Mr Perry Strong, fastest qualifier and 4-5 favorite Phantom Fury, Apollitical Brooke, Flight Force, Brown Tres Seis, Ym Valentine, Dee Favorite Girl, and Jess Shantastic completed the order of finish.
