Raul Herrera rode Once Over to a neck victory in Sunday’s $50,000 James Isaac Hobbs Stakes (G2) at Zia Park.
Prepped by Jose Marquez for owner Jaime Busanda of Midland, Texas, Once Over went 350 yards in :17.688. The $30,000 winner’s share of the purse from the first Quarter Horse stakes of the 56-day Zia Park meet pushed the Walk Thru Fire gelding’s earnings to $260,875.
Once Over was making just his second official start in six months. The gelding was bred in California by Ed Allred, and he is out of the stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed Check Him Out mare Look Her Over. Once Over is a full brother to He Looks Hot, a gelded son of Walk Thru Fire who won the 2014 Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1) and last year’s Vessels Maturity (G1).
Raced in New Mexico and California, Once Over has won nine of 30 starts, and his five stakes victories include last year’s Spencer Childers California Breeders’ Championship (RG1) at Los Alamitos and West Texas Maturity (G2) at Sunland Park.
Don Quixote finished second and was followed by TF Im That Guy, Perrys Stamina, 9-5 favorite Apollitical Ok, Born To B Bad, Jm Splenda, Stormy Red Morning, Unfinished Biz, and Midnight Heat.
