Jess Paint Your Lips parlayed a fast start from post 5 into a three-quarter length victory in Saturday's $50,495 Decketta Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares at Remington Park.
Ridden by Jorge Torres and aided by a reported 17-mph tail wind, Jess Paint Your Lips went 350 yards in :17.014, missing by just 32/1000ths of a second the track record set by Hes Relentless (:16.982) on May 31, 2014. Stacy Charette-Hill prepped the homebred 5-year-old daughter of champion Jess Louisiana blue for owner Michael A. Pohl of Montgomery, Texas.
"It was really a quick start; I was just praying that she was staying on her feet and she left good and didn't fail me," said Torres. "I saw (runner-up One Sweet Racy) in the corner of my eye, and I just asked her a little bit and she took off again."
Jess Paint Your Lips was making her first start since January 7, when the mare ran fifth in the 400-yard, $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap (G1) at Los Alamitos. She is out of Paint Your Lips, a winning homebred daughter of Corona Cartel who was a finalist in the 2010 Oklahoma Horsemen's Association Derby (R) at Fair Meadows at Tulsa. Her third dam, the First Down Dash mare Dashing Folly, was the sport's world champion in 1996.
Raced in six states, Jess Paint Your Lips has won eight of 11 starts, and her two graded stakes victories include last year's Grade 1, 400-yard AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) at Prairie Meadows. The $29,730 winner's share of the Decketta Stakes purse increased her earnings to $158,962.
Mojo Perry finished third, a half of a length behind runner-up One Sweet Racy. As and Js, Mamasito Magic, Pitchin Woo, BF Fooserageous, JC Wild Rose, Apollitical Scout, and C Twister Seis completed the order of finish.
