Field Set for Sam Houston Derby

Washta Magnolia posted the fastest qualifying time on Friday.

Jorge Aguilera's Washta Magnolia is the fastest qualifier to the April 28, $191,900 Sam Houston Derby (G3).

Racing in the seventh of eight 350-yard trials at Sam Houston Race Park on Friday, Washta Magnolia defeated sixth-fastest qualifier Special Lil Darling by one length in :17.660. Manuel Gutierrez rode the gelded son of Cartel Success for trainer Jorge E. Lopez.

Washta Magnolia was bred in Oklahoma by Andrew T. Smith. The gelding has won one of six starts and has earned $4,780 while racing in Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana.
