Jesstacartel Tops Golden State Derby Qualifiers

The One Sweet Jess gelding leads the way to the August 19 final at Los Alamitos.

Lesley Joyner's Jesstacartel is the fastest qualifier to the August 19, $231,300 Golden State Derby (G2).

Racing in the second of two trials on Sunday, Jesstacartel defeated second-fastest qualifier Moonie Blues by a half of a length while covering 400 yards in :19.501. Cruz Mendez rode the homebred son of One Sweet Jess for trainer Mark Skeen.

Jesstacartel was bred in Utah. Campaigned exclusively at Los Alamitos, the gelding has won five of seven starts, including two stakes, and he has earned $46,625.

Parsons Ranch's A Political Lady finished third as the 2-5 favorite in the second trial and posted the third-fastest qualifying time. A Political Lady entered the Golden State Derby trials with a six-race win streak that included the March 30, 400-yard La Primera del Ano Derby (G3).
