Making her first-ever start at Ruidoso Downs, Dashnunder Afullmoon on Sunday posted the fastest qualifying time to the September 2, $1,237,604 All American Derby (G1).
Dashnunder Afullmoon won the third of 11 440-yard trials by one length from second-fastest qualifier Hes Limitless in :21.131. Raul Ramirez Jr. rode the brown daughter of Heza Fast Dash for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. of Rosenberg, Texas, and trainer Josue Ponce.
Dashnunder Afullmoon was one of four 3-year-olds supplemented to the trials for $50,000; the others were fifth-fastest qualifier Jess Move You, 10th-fastest qualifier Pyc Fun N Fancy, and non-qualifier KVN Corona. The filly was making her first start since June 2, when she finished fourth in the 400-yard, $100,000 Junos Request Stakes (G2) at Remington Park. But it was the final out of her 2-year-old season, a wire-to-wire, one-length victory in the 350-yard, $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes (RG2) at Fair Grounds, that convinced her connections to aim at the All American Derby trials.
"After she won the Champions Day Juvenile, we decided to go for the All American Derby," said Marquez. "You may only get one like her in a lifetime. We brought her up here in June so she would be totally acclimated."
Marquez acquired Dashnunder Afullmoon from breeder D & S Racing LLC for $44,500 at the 2016 Louisiana QHBA Yearling Sale. The filly has won six of nine starts, and her three stakes victories include a half-length victory in last year's 350-yard, $705,000 Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1) at Delta Downs. She has earned $589,132.
Second-fastest qualifier Hes Limitless ran second in the third heat, covering his quarter-mile trip in :21.278. Agustin Silva rode the Corona Cartel gelding for owner Jack Smith Farms and trainer John Stinebaugh.
Jess Move You won the fifth trial by a half of a length in :21.414. Jose Alvarez rode the Apollitical Jess gelding for owners Ricardo A. Bernal and Reymundo F. Resendez.
Jess Move You has won three of his five outs this summer at Ruidoso Downs, including the 400-yard, $759,000 Ruidoso Derby (G1) in June. He was coming off of a seventh-place finish after he tossed his head at the start and got away slowly in the 440-yard, $802,000 Rainbow Derby (G1) on July 21.
"That is a throw-out race," said trainer Rudy Valles of Jess Move You's Rainbow Derby effort. "It was just bad racing luck. He's been training great since then."
