Making just his third career start, Mark and Annette McCloy's MM Fourinthemorning sprinted to a three-quarter length victory in Sunday's Grade 1, $1-million Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.
MM Fourinthemorning went 400 yards in :19.537 and earned a 98 speed index under jockey Ricky Ramirez. Blane Wood prepped the sorrel son of champion Mr Jess Perry.
MM Fourinthemorning was bred in New Mexico by the McCloys, residents of Tatum, New Mexico. The fifth-fastest overall qualifier, the gelding broke his maiden with a one-length win at odds of 13-1 in the seventh of 14 Rainbow Futurity trials on July 6, the first of two days of trials.
MM Fourinthemorning has raced exclusively at Ruidoso Downs. He made his first start on May 26 and finished seventh in a 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trial.
"He was too inexperienced for the Ruidoso Futurity trials, so we worked with him in the gate," said Wood. "He was green, but he'd outworked everything at the ranch."
Ramirez qualified three of Wood's Rainbow qualifiers and decided to ride MM Fourinthemorning in the final.
"I was hoping he would overcome being green," the jockey said. "He was a little green (today), but he really came on."
MM Fourinthemorning is out of Easeful Dinastia, a winning 9-year-old daughter of Corona Cartel and Dinastia Toll BRZ. The gelding has won two of his three starts, and the $420,000 winner's share of the Rainbow purse pushed his bankroll to $424,800.
Lethal Lil finished second and was followed by Flying Cowboy 123, Flashing Candy, Coach A Comin, Longgone Perry, Sure Fire Quick, fastest overall qualifier Suze Returns, One Famous Stone, and My Mystery Lover.
