Jesse James Jr Filly Tops New Mexican Spring Futurity Trials

Zee James makes her debut with a dominating performance at Sunland Park.

Zee James, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr owned by Robert Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey, is the fastest qualifier to the April 7 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-olds.

Racing in the last of 11 300-yard trials on Friday, Zee James won by a clear 3 3/4 lengths in :15.002 while making her career debut. Adrian Ramos rode the bay filly for trainer Wes Giles.

Zee James is out of On A Bunny, a homebred stakes-winning daughter of On A High and a finalist in the 1993 Southwest Derby (G3) at Albuquerque Downs.

Second-fastest qualifier Cat Daddys Lil Girl won the eighth heat in :15.216 while making her first lifetime start. A homebred Big Daddy Cartel gelding, he was ridden by Mauro Salcedo for owners Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vasquez and trainer Donna McArthur.

The winner of the New Mexican Spring Futurity final will bank the $186,286 winner's share of a $396,354 purse.
