Eighth-fastest qualifier Wagon On Fire V sprinted to a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday's Grade 3, $187,950 West Texas Derby at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Raul Herrera, who earlier on the card rode Everybuddys Talkin to victory in the $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (RG3), Wagon On Fire V covered 400 yards in :19.401 while aided by a reported 12-mph tail wind, and his margin of victory was a neck from fifth-fastest qualifier Dominate This. Ricardo Armendariz, the trainer of Everybuddys Talkin, prepped the homebred gray son of PYC Paint Your Wagon for owner Valeriano Racing Stables LLC.

Wagon On Fire V was bred in Oklahoma. The gelding is out of Sixy Chamisa, an 11-year-old Sixes Royal mare who won three stakes in New Mexico from 2009-11, including the 2010 Sunburst Stakes. A $xxx, xxx buy at the xxxxx, Wagon On Fire V has won two of seven starts, and the $88,337 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes win bumped his earnings to $102,981.

He Be Flashy, the 5-2 favorite in the full field of 10 sophomores, finished third and was followed by Jessica Alexandra, Cessna On Fire V, Estrella Damm, Jess Move You, Siximoons, Camellia, and The Flash Force.
