Singles Cruise, a California-bred daughter of Favorite Cartel and the fastest qualifier, cruised to a neck victory in Sunday's 400-yard, $56,252 Canada Cup Futurity (RG3), one of two Quarter Horse stakes contested at Century Downs on Sunday.
Racing for Barry and Janice Sather and trained by Janice Sather, Singles Cruise earned an 85 speed index while tripping the timer in :19.944. Caesar Cervantes rode the brown filly, who banked $25,569 from her third career stakes win.
Singles Cruise was bred by Dr. Steve Burns, and she was a $16,000 purchase at the 2017 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale in Oklahoma City. The filly is out of Going Single, a daughter of Mr Eye Opener. She traces back to her third dam, Teller Queen, a daughter of world champion Easy Jet who won five Grade 1 stakes in California from 1988-90.
Raced exclusively in Alberta, Singles Cruise has won five of seven starts, including the June 27 Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity and August 19 John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge, and she has earned $52,241.
Timbersknightryder finished second and was followed by Papas Coleen, O Kingsley, Special Corona Wave, Zoomn Wave, JB Runaway Special, Poutn And Zoomin, and Always Right. Third-fastest qualifier Goldin Warrior was listed as a vet scratch.
Also on Sunday, second-fastest qualifier Stripsteak rallied to win the $26,912 Canada Cup Derby (R).
Trained by William Leech for owner Charles G. Stojan, Stripsteak covered 400 yards in :19.822, and his margin of victory was a neck from True Copy. Ricardo Moreno rode the bay son of One Sweet Jess, who returned a $6.70 win mutuel as the 2-1 favorite in the field of nine.
Stripsteak was bred in Calfiornia by Dr. Steve Burns, and he was a $14,000 yearling buy at the 2016 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. The gelding has won eight of 13 starts and has earned $40,402, of which $29,429 has been banked this season. His two stakes wins include the 400-yard, $26,000 Peace Country Derby at Evergreen Park on July 29.
First Prize Cruise, Jd Wagon Boss, Knotty Knita, Dont Hezitate, fastest qualifier Bringonthewave, Thisbudsforyou, and JB Fictation completed the order of finish. Tenth-fastest qualifier Atomic Blondie was a vet scratch.
